Find the right solution for your needs

Whether you are a new homeowner or an avid woodworker with a busy shop, the right wet/dry vac can go a long way toward making your daily cleanup tasks easier. When making your selection, you’ll want to seriously consider issues such as frequency of use, capacity requirements, existing storage space, typical cleaning duties and special features. Before you make your final choice, ask yourself these questions:

How often will you use your wet/dry vac?

What types of applications do you need it for?

What size capacity best meets your current and future needs?

Where will you store the unit when not in use?

Are there special features or accessories you require?

Size, Capacity and Power

Wet/dry vacs are available in a wide range of types and sizes from portable and handheld units to large 18-gallon professional vacs. You’ll want to look at both the capacity (measured in gallons) and the peak horsepower (hp). These two pieces of information can provide a good indication of just how suitable a match it is. Though it is often the case that higher capacity and higher hp go hand in hand, this is not always so. Small units with a high horsepower and low capacity often serve in demanding environments with restrictive space requirements.

Light-Duty Tasks: For small tasks and light household chores, look for a low-capacity unit in the 2-6 gallon range with a peak hp of 1 to 4.5. These vacs often feature a compact and lightweight design that is perfect for storing out of the way. Smaller, cordless units offer handheld convenience that is ideal for the car, boat or home. Others are mounted on casters for easy maneuvering around your kitchen or playroom.

Used to clean wet and dry spills around the house

Perfect for apartments, small work areas and other limited spaces

Handles debris standard vacuum cleaners can’t pick up

Medium-Duty Chores: Medium range wet/dry vacs run anywhere from 8-14 gallons and are useful around the house, workshop, garage and more. With anywhere from 5 to 6 hp of power, you can be assured of great suction coupled with versatile performance. Some units convert to blowers for easy handling of lawn and garden tasks such as leaf collection and clearing grass clippings or for inflating air mattresses and basketballs. Use the unit to take care of wet basements or clean up spills in the garage. This multipurpose tool is designed to tackle a wide range of tasks.

Standard household cleanup from home to garden

Perfect for your garage, workshop, basement and more

Picks up everything from fine dust to larger debris

Can convert to a leaf blower for more versatile use

Heavy-Duty Applications: Heavy-duty and commercial applications that need intense cleaning power should look for a peak hp of 6 or more. These units usually have an impressive 14-18 gallon capacity and are perfect for busy shops, industrial cleaning and more. These vacs feature a sturdy cart or are mounted on large casters for increased mobility. A wide array of included attachments enables you to tackle a variety of surfaces and substances.

Commercial cleaning for offices, warehouses and more

Perfect for busy mechanical workshops, garages and jobsites

Features

Quiet Operation: Gone are the days when you needed ear protection just to run your wet/dry vac around the shop. New motor technologies have introduced quieter operation without sacrificing airflow, providing strong suction that won’t disrupt your environment.

Filters: The filter on your wet/dry vac helps trap dirt, drywall dust and other debris and prevents it from recirculation. Those who suffer from asthma and allergies will appreciate the extra protection of HEPA filters, available on some units, which harness more than 99% of dust mites, pollen and other allergens to help ensure that the air around you is clean and irritant free. Many filters also feature antimicrobial treatments to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew and other harmful substances that can get into the air and create health risks. Pay close attention to the number of stages in the filtration system. The more stages available, the more control for maximizing performance with a wide range of debris types.

On-Board Tool Storage: Make sure you always have that needed attachment right at hand with built-in storage for all your nozzles and cleaning accessories.

Portability: Many units feature a high-end motor with smaller capacity to deliver the same quality cleaning power as your large wet/dry vac in a small, portable format.

Storage: When you have a small workspace, but you need powerful wet/dry cleaning capabilities, look to convenient wall-mounted units and other space-saving designs. These units often feature higher horsepower ratings with a small capacity for heavy-duty performance in more restricted spaces.

Cleanup: For larger capacity units, make sure that emptying liquid content is simple and easy with a built-in spout or drain for hassle-free cleanup.

Hoses, Nozzles and Attachments: To ensure continuous operation, consider the size of the hose and nozzle. With large, wide passageways, you greatly reduce the potential for clogs and blockages. If you plan to use your wet/dry vac on large substances like wood chips or other chunks of debris, make sure the hose and nozzle have a wide enough diameter to accommodate typical usage.

Whole House and Point of Use Systems
Conventional tank water heaters are whole house systems that send hot water from the tank through the house to the point where you want hot water. Tankless water heaters are typically whole house systems as well, heating water as needed. Whole house systems can provide hot water to more than one fixture at a time. Depending on the size of your home and the number of fixtures, you may need to consider adding additional hot water heating capacity.

Point of use systems are individual units that install directly under the sink or in a closet. These systems deliver instant hot water to a specific location. Point of use systems typically augment a whole house system when instant or additional hot water is needed.

Other Criteria
Once you’ve determined the fuel, tank type and whether you want a whole house or point of use system, you’ll want to consider capacity, fuel efficiency, and size options.

Capacity
It’s important to select a hot water heater that provides enough hot water for your home. An undersized water heater will work harder and have a shorter lifespan.

Tankless: To determine the size of the tankless hot water heater you need, you’ll need to calculate how much hot water you’ll need at one time, which is called the flow rate. Flow rate is measured in gallons per minute (gpm). The table below provides typical flow rates for typical household hot water applications.

To determine the gpm you need, add the gpms of the major fixtures or appliances you expect to be using simultaneously. As an example, if you typically run the kitchen faucet (1.5 gpm) and the dishwasher (2.5 gpm) at the same time, you’ll need to heat 4.0 gpm of water. Once you have identified the maximum gpm required for your tankless unit, the next factor to consider is the temperature rise it needs to provide.

Dimensions
Once you know the capacity for your water heater, remember to take the unit’s dimensions into consideration.

A new conventional storage replacement unit may be larger than the old one because more insulation is required to meet the latest strict federal energy standards. Keep this in mind where units are installed in closets or other close quarters.

If you are upgrading to a larger unit, you may need to have plumbing run to it if it has to be relocated. One way to avoid relocating the unit is to select a model in a non-standard size, such as a unit that is shorter but larger around, known as a “low boy” hot water heater.

If you are purchasing a tankless water heater, be sure the location you choose for installation meets ventilation requirements.

The ideal location for a tankless unit is on an exterior wall near a gas supply line, water supply line and electrical power source. This is also the easiest and most cost-effective way to run the venting.

The unit should have ½” clearance on the sides, 12” on the front and 18” off the floor.

Energy Efficiency
Whichever fuel source you use, a water heater can be the third largest energy user in your home, so you’ll want a unit that offers energy and cost savings. Fortunately, almost all water heaters offer increased efficiencies to meet increasingly strict federal energy standards. Look for the Energy Factor (EF) rating on the unit. This rating measures how efficiently a unit converts energy into heat as well as how much heat is lost during storage. The higher the energy factor, the more energy efficient the water heater is. Look for EF ratings as close to 1 as possible. Electric heaters tend to have the highest EF ratings.

Features to Consider

Self Cleaning
Water heaters with this feature automatically fight lime and sediment buildup to lengthen tank life and maintain peak efficiency for a longer period of time.

Recovery Speed
The amount of time it takes to heat a full tank of water. Look for a model with a fast recovery speed if you have a tendency to use a lot of hot water.

Automatic Shutoff Valve
This valve helps prevent fires by shutting off the flow of gas if there’s movement in the ground or the gas flow experiences a sudden, sizeable increase.

Water filters can improve the smell and taste of water by reducing sediment, pollutants and other contaminants. Adding a system to filter your water doesn’t have to require a major renovation or big investment of time and money. There are many systems from which to choose, from economical pitcher filters to more comprehensive reverse osmosis units. This guide will explain the different types of systems available and how to determine which will meet your individual needs, so you can feel confident you’re selecting the right filter system for your home.

Types of Filtration Systems
Water filter devices can be installed in a number of ways. The most basic filters attach to a carafe or pitcher while more elaborate point-of use and whole house systems provide filtration for a greater volume of water. A household pre-filtration system is the simplest and most comprehensive solution for filtered water throughout your home. However, when this isn’t feasible, various types of filtration systems can be used to create a cost effective solution. Consult the table below to learn more about options for filtration systems.

NSF Ratings
Filters with NSF/ANSI standard 53 certification have been independently tested to show that they can reduce levels of certain pollutants under specified conditions.

Ultraviolet Light
Kill viruses and bacteria in water, but they don’t filter out chemicals. They can be used in conjunction with carbon filters.

Filter Change Indicator
Look for a water filter that has a flashing light or color-changing indicator that lets you know when it’s time for a new filter.

Wall ovens are a great alternative to a traditional range unit. They are designed to provide an excellent fit in any kitchen, no matter the layout or space restrictions. They offer tremendous placement versatility and can better utilize space in smaller kitchens. Wall ovens also eliminate the need to bend over when removing heavy dishes from the oven, helping to minimize strain on your back and making it easier to keep an eye on what you’re cooking. Paired with a sophisticated cooktop they can provide a stylish, modern look for your kitchen. Consider the following questions to learn more about what types of wall ovens are available and which one might be right for you:

What are the characteristics of gas ovens?

What are the characteristics of electric ovens?

What heating mechanisms do wall ovens use?

How large of an oven do you need?

Are there any special features you’d like to have?

Gas vs. Electric, Heating Type, Construction and Maintenance

Before choosing an oven, you’ll want to assess your cooking needs and how frequently you plan to use the unit. Wall ovens are available with a vast array of special features that will help save you time in the kitchen and improve the quality of your cooking, such as a delayed-start mechanism or hidden bake elements. Choosing the right combination of features, oven size and heating type will ensure that you can prepare all of your favorite dishes just the way you like them.

Gas vs. Electric: The first decision you’ll need to make when purchasing a wall oven is whether you want a gas- or electric-powered unit. There was a time when electric ovens took a little longer to heat up than gas ovens, but modern machines don’t tend to have that problem. As a result, which one you choose is largely a matter of personal preference and what type of connection you have available. If you don’t have a gas connection handy, you may end up choosing an electric model by default. Consult the chart below to learn more about the characteristics of each type and a few points of consideration.

Heating Type: Many wall ovens use standard, or thermal, heating technology. It is not, however, the only option available. You can also choose from microwave and convection cooking ovens. Some units even combine different cooking technologies for increased versatility. Convection heating involves moving air around with a fan to cook food evenly from all sides, allowing for a nicely browned exterior and a fully cooked inside. Though convection cooking can prepare food more quickly, the fan may take up room within the oven cavity, slightly reducing the amount of usable space, and it can add a significant amount to the total cost.

Some ovens feature standard cooking power combined with a separate built-in microwave while others combine the two technologies into one unit

Some models utilize standard, microwave and convection heating technology at the same time to reduce cooking time

Ovens with a convection recipe converter automatically adjust cook times for convection heating to ensure the best results

Construction and Maintenance: If you have a big family, your cooking needs will differ greatly from people who only have to cook for one or two people. Wall ovens are available in both single- and double-oven configurations. Double ovens provide twice the cooking space, making it easier to prepare large meals. If you tend to cook several dishes at once, look for units with multiple rack positions for maximum cooking flexibility. Multiple rack positions also allow you to accommodate larger cookware. When it comes time to clean up after a big meal, you’ll appreciate the ease and convenience of a self-cleaning oven. Removable oven bottoms will also make cleaning easier, as you can pop out the bottom, wash it and then slide it back into place. Ovens are often made of tempered glass or stainless steel, so make sure to use appropriate cleaners for each. Avoid using abrasive cleaners on delicate surfaces and make sure to rinse thoroughly.

Some wall ovens feature a one-and-a-half oven configuration, with the half oven providing room for such functions as warming, grilling and reheating

Double ovens may offer convection cooking in one of the units

Make sure shelves are level to prevent food from sliding forward

Width is generally 24”, 27” or 30”

Wall ovens often come in black, white or stainless-steel finishes

Removable doors make it easier to get inside ovens to clean them thoroughly

Oven knobs can often be removed to make cleaning them easier

Features

Accurate Preheat: Many ovens monitor preheating based on a set period of time. Some, however, actually measure the temperature of the oven, indicating that it is fully preheated and ready for use only when it actually reaches the preset temperature.

Delayed Start: When you’re leading a busy life, it’s hard enough finding time to eat dinner, let alone prepare it. A delayed-start feature lets you program your oven to begin cooking even when you’re not home, meaning dinner will be hot and ready as soon as you walk in the door.

Safety Lock: Safety locks are particularly important if you have little ones who like to help bake their favorite treats. A safety lock feature prevents the oven from being used unless it’s turned off, meaning your children can’t turn the heat on and accidentally burn themselves.

Large Window: With a large window, you’ll be able to clearly see food as it cooks without having to open the door repeatedly, helping to prevent overcooking while providing a tantalizing preview of the meal to come.

Electronic Controls: For maximum effectiveness, look for wall ovens that feature electronic controls, which make it easy to set precise temperatures and program timers while helping you take advantage of all of your oven’s functions.

Hidden Bake Element: Cleaning the oven can be a pain, especially if you have a manual-clean oven. If that’s the case, look for one with a hidden bake element, which makes the bottom of the oven easier to wipe down.

Steam Oven: Steam cooking is a newer technology that combines steaming power with standard thermal cooking to heat foods thoroughly all the way through while helping them retain moisture and succulence.

Keep your floors looking great with the right cleaning equipment

Choosing the right cleaning equipment can go a long way towards keeping your carpets and floors looking their best. Vacuums can help remove pet hair and dander from furniture, whisk away dirt particles from your hard floors and keep draperies, upholstery and stairways clean and clear of dust and debris. For deeper stains, steam cleaners or extractors help you get at under-the-surface substances that regular vacuums can’t remove. For those who suffer from allergies, a vacuum cleaner can be the first line of defense in keeping airborne irritants to a minimum. When it comes to purchasing a new model, it is helpful to keep these questions in mind:

Do you need a vacuum that can handle carpeted and hard floors?

Will you need to clean stairs, upholstery, draperies or other items?

Do you prefer a model with a bagged or bagless dust capture system?

Is the noise level of the vacuum or extractor a consideration?

Do you or members of your household suffer from allergies or asthma?

Type of Vacuums, Uses and Tips

With such a wide variety of cleaning tools, the model you choose will depend on a number of factors. The layout of your home may influence whether you choose an easy-to-maneuver upright or the flexibility of a canister vacuum. If you are going to regularly clean stairs or upholstery, be sure to choose a unit with a detachable hose and the appropriate attachments. For quick cleanup of daily messes, consider a handheld vacuum in either a corded or cordless configuration.

Upright: Uprights are self-contained units with the hose, power brush, vacuum bag or dirt cup and motor housed together in one body. They are well suited to carpet cleaning because the motor is generally right behind the brush for intense suction power. Most uprights can be adjusted to accommodate the height of your carpet, and some have features that allow them to clean bare floors as well. Built-in hoses allow you to clean upholstery, stairs and other surfaces.

Look for a brush on/off switch for cleaning bare floors without causing damage

Motorized pet brushes remove hair and dander from carpets, furniture and upholstery

The pile-height adjustment lets you match the vacuum height to your carpet type

Lightweight models improve maneuverability and are easier to transport between floors

Canister: Canister vacuums offer flexible cleaning power with a main unit that houses the motor and vacuum bag or dirt cup. A hose connects the main unit to the power brush or appropriate attachment for cleaning. Canisters often include a variety of separate attachments that enable you to perform a wide range of tasks, including cleaning bare floors, carpets, upholstery, curtains and ceilings.

Power brushes are often slim enough to get under low-lying furniture

Suction control lets you reduce the airflow for use on drapes and curtains

On-board tool storage gives you easier access to needed accessories

Robotic: Robotic models offer the latest innovation in vacuum technology for increased convenience by taking care of household messes for you. Since their introduction, robotic vacuums have received significant improvements that make them more effective and efficient at removing dust, dirt and other substances. They work especially well on hard floors and low carpets and usually include advanced capabilities that help them plot a course, detect edges and avoid stairs.

Operates via rechargeable batteries that can be replenished when the unit is not in use

Many robotic vacuums are designed to return to the charging station when done cleaning

Programmable models can be set to clean at predetermined times for added convenience

Central: Central vacuums give you the benefit of an internal cleaning system that is built directly into the structure of your house. While the main unit is installed in a central location, suction ports are strategically placed throughout your home for maximum connectivity. A long cleaning hose is then attached to these suction ports allowing for simple, effective cleaning of every corner and crevice of your house.

Quiet operation allows you to clean without disturbing family members

Larger capacity doesn’t require emptying as often as other vacuum types

Central vacuums eliminate the need to lug a heavy machine around your home

Most central vacuums have a 30′ hose or longer for easy cleaning in hard-to-reach areas

Handheld/Stick: These are often portable, lightweight vacuums designed for light cleaning around the home or in your vehicle. They are a good addition to your main vacuum and work well for quick spills and messes.

Cordless design available on some models lets you clean anywhere

Slim, compact, lightweight design for easy transport and maneuverability

Wall-mounted models offer quick, simple access for everyday cleanup

Steam Cleaner/Extractor: Steam cleaners and extractors use heated water and powerful suction to treat tough stains and remove stubborn dirt from your carpets. Look for units that offer conveniences such as separate tanks for clean and soiled water, heat boosters to keep water warm for easier stain removal and one-pass application and extraction for quick cleanup.

Special brushes on some models are used to treat more difficult stains for better results

Selectable brush speeds allow you to adjust cleaning intensity to the necessary amount

Features

HEPA Filtration: Some vacuums have HEPA or HEPA-type filters to help capture a wide variety of dirt and dust particles that can irritate allergies and respiratory ailments. HEPA filters trap 99.97% of particles measuring as small as 0.3 microns, removing allergy-inducing materials from carpeting and the air.

Dirt Sensors: Some vacuums now include sensor technologies that detect the presence of dirt and let you know when you have thoroughly removed all dust, dirt and debris from an area.

Self-Propelled Motor: Vacuums with self-propelled motors allow you to effortlessly move across the floor and maneuver around furniture with a smooth motion that won’t strain sensitive back muscles.

Bagless Technology: Many vacuums are now incorporating the convenience of bagless operation into their design. These types of vacuums include a reusable canister or cup to collect dirt, eliminating the need to buy bags. Many canisters are clear, allowing you to tell at a glance when it is full.

Telescoping Wands: Some units include telescoping wands that give you a wider reach and allow you to get at areas that are hard to clean, including tall ceilings, the tops of cupboards or underneath cabinets and furniture.

By adding a few small appliances to your kitchen, you can transform the time you spend cooking and preparing food into a quick, effortless and enjoyable experience.

With an abundance of devices designed to make common tasks such as chopping, slicing and mixing fast and easy, your options are virtually unlimited. Choose from food processors, blenders, stand mixers and other units that can help you create dishes that look and taste great in half the time. Even standard favorites, such as the coffeepot or toaster, have more functionality than ever and are an essential component in any kitchen. Before you decide which appliances are right for you, take a few moments to learn about all your options. The following questions will help you get started:

What are the most common tasks you perform in the kitchen?

How much available counter space do you have?

Are you more concerned about cost or functionality?

Are you looking for appliances with a distinctive style or design?

Are there any special features that are important to you?

Types, Function, Features and Selection

Whether cooking is your favorite hobby or simply a necessary chore, small kitchen appliances can turn any kitchen into the best room in the house. From coffeemakers with automatic grind and brew functions to Belgian waffle makers that turn an ordinary breakfast into a gourmet feast, the simplicity and convenience they offer are hard to resist. Whatever equipment you choose, keep in mind that functionality isn’t their only benefit. Many of today’s small kitchen appliances feature unique designs and bright, vibrant colors that make them both a stylish and useful addition to any kitchen.

Coffeemakers and Bean Grinders: If you’re one of those people who rely on that first cup of coffee to get going in the morning, then you know how important it is to have a good, reliable coffeemaker in your kitchen. Models range from the most basic of units to elaborate machines with built-in bean grinders and programmable brew cycles. If you enjoy your coffee on the go, look for a travel system that brews the coffee directly into an included travel mug or set of mugs. Whether you drink one cup a day or ten, be sure to choose a unit that has the ideal capacity for your needs. Most models brew between ten and twelve cups, though smaller four-cup units are also available.

Thermal carafes keep coffee warm for hours without overheating or scorching

Pause-and-pour feature allows you to grab a cup of coffee before it is finished brewing

Models equipped with an alarm allow you to set up your coffee pot to brew automatically at a specific time

Espresso makers enable you to make café-style drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes right at home

Bean grinders and coffee mills make it easy for you to grind coffee beans at home for fresher flavor

Food Processors, Blenders and Mixers: Food processors, blenders and mixers are indispensable allies when it comes to cooking. They have been specifically designed to help with cutting, chopping, mixing, blending and more. Blenders are fairly versatile and are often used to make blended soups, smoothies, frozen drinks, dips and other items. Food processors offer some of the same functionality as blenders but can also be used for activities like chopping vegetables or grating cheese. Mixers can be either handheld or mounted on a stand. Handheld mixers tend to be more compact for easier storage and are used for everything from stirring a cake mix to making creamy mashed potatoes. Stand mixers can be used for all the same tasks as a handheld unit but don’t require holding, so your hands are free to tackle other tasks.

Blenders with more powerful motors and ice-crushing capabilities are good for smoothies and other frozen drinks

Blenders and mixers with automatic power adjustment maintain a consistent speed under any load

Blender/food processor units combine the functionality of both appliances in one convenient solution

Food processors usually include a variety of attachments and accessories that allow you to perform different functions

Stand mixers are generally more powerful than hand mixers, making them good for mixing thicker ingredients, kneading bread and other labor-intensive tasks.

Specialty Appliances: Some small kitchen appliances are designed with a special task in mind, such as steaming rice, popping popcorn or making pizza. These devices occasionally have multiple applications but in many cases are designed for one specific function. While some of these appliances can be used weekly or even daily, others, such as a chocolate fountains or cotton candy machines, are designed for use during special events.

Ice cream and frozen yogurt makers allow you to create your own homemade frozen treats

Griddles and waffle makers are designed to help you create tasty waffles, pancakes and more

Electric knives and meat slicers make it easier to carve up your favorite roast or prepare sandwich meat

Countertop grills allow you to enjoy the taste of grilled hamburgers even in the middle of winter

Popcorn makers can turn any night into family movie night with delicious theater-style popcorn

Pizza ovens are a great way to get healthy, nutritious food on the table without resorting to take out

Toasters and Toaster Ovens: Toasted bread and bagels are an integral part of many morning meals. This classic kitchen appliance has come a long way in the last several years. With extra-wide slots, digital controls and space-age designs, these formerly pedestrian units are better than ever. Depending on your price range, there is a wide variety of available models with varying features and capacity. Choose from the standard two-slice toaster or a family-sized eight-slice model. If you want a little more functionality, consider a versatile toaster oven, which gives you the same capabilities as a toaster with some of the features of an oven.

A cool-touch exterior helps prevent accidental burns and injuries

Toasters with lift levers make it easier to grab your toast when it gets stuck

Toaster ovens with convection capabilities provide even more cooking versatility

Digital controls on both toasters and toaster ovens allow for more precise settings and results

Fryers, Steamers & Cookers: When it comes to steaming, frying and cooking it up in the kitchen, there are a number of appliances designed to help you out. Deep fryers allow you to safely heat oil to high temperatures for use in making French fries, wings, egg rolls and more. For savory cooking with minimal effort, toss some ingredients into your slow cooker in the morning and come home to a tasty meal at night.

Temperature adjustment and digital controls allow for more precise cooking

Capacity ranges vary, so be sure to buy a unit big enough to feed your largest gathering

Combination units that provide boil, steam and fry capabilities offer added versatility

Selecting Small Kitchen Appliances: The search for the right appliances begins with determining what tasks you need the most help with. For basic actions such as chopping, mixing and blending, consider adding a blender, mixer or food processor to your kitchen. Specialty appliances such as rice steamers, deep fryers or popcorn makers can also come in handy when it comes to performing a more specific function. Use the chart below to learn more about what you can do with small kitchen appliances and which ones are right for you.

Refrigerators play a central role in every kitchen, allowing you to keep food and beverages fresh and ready for use throughout the week. Finding a model that is right for you is simply a matter of evaluating what you need in terms of space, function and style. With a wide variety of options to choose from, including top-mount, bottom-mount, side-by-side, compact and built-in refrigerators, you’ll have no trouble finding one that combines the right capacity, features and look you want. Replacing an old refrigerator with an energy-efficient model may also help you reduce your energy consumption and lower monthly utility bills. Consider the following questions as you learn more about the available options:

What type and style of refrigerator are you looking for?

How much space do you have available for your refrigerator?

How much capacity will you need to store food?

What organization and storage options are available?

How can a new refrigerator improve energy efficiency?

Types, Capacity, Organization, Style and Efficiency

Before you begin your search for a new refrigerator, the first thing you’ll need to do is measure the space you have available. Determine how wide, tall and deep your new unit can be, and remember that you’ll need to leave enough space for the doors to swing freely. Don’t forget to take into account getting the unit into your home. If your doorways are narrower than the refrigerator, you may not be able to get it into the kitchen. Once you’ve ascertained how much room you have, one of the next decisions you’ll need to make is how much capacity you’ll need. Large families tend to require significantly more storage space than one or two people living in a small apartment. Next, consider available features, such as variable-temperature drawers, adjustable or spill-proof shelving and even in-door water dispensers with built-in filtration systems. Also, you’ll want to choose a style that suits the décor of your kitchen. Prices for refrigerators range from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand depending on type, size and features.

Types: Refrigerators are available in several different designs, each of which offers an array of advantages. Choose from top-mount, bottom-mount, side-by-side, built-in or compact models. Depending on the unit, you may even be able to find a cabinet- or counter-depth model that features a shallow design that doesn’t jut out past the counter, giving your kitchen a sleek look. The chart below provides a description of each type as well as a few points of consideration.

Capacity: Refrigerators are available in a wide range of capacities, from compact units with around 3 cu. ft. of space to large, family-sized units that feature upwards of 26 cu. ft. Excluding freezer space, you’ll probably want to have at least 10 cu. ft. of space if there are two people in your household. If there are more, a good rule of thumb is to add around 1.5 cu. ft. per person, again excluding freezer storage space. These numbers are dependant on how much food you prepare at home—if you eat out frequently, you’ll probably be able to purchase a smaller unit. Overall, around 21 cu. ft. of space should suffice for an average-sized family.

Empty refrigerators operate with less efficiency than fully stocked units

If you frequently entertain guests, look for a unit with greater storage capacity

Consider adding a second refrigerator in your garage or basement if you need a great deal of extra space

Organization: The primary means of storing food in your refrigerator are bins, shelves, drawers and baskets. If you like to keep large amounts of milk or juice on hand, look for door bins capable of holding gallon-sized containers. Many refrigerators have wire shelves, which allow spills to fall through and splatter items below. For easy cleanup and spill control, look for units with spill-proof glass shelves. Adjustable shelving allows you to move them up and down to create space for large dishes while wine racks, snack trays and lift-out baskets in the freezer provide other organizational options. If you tend to purchase a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, look for produce drawers with humidity controls. Different fruits and veggies require different amounts of humidity to remain crisp, so these drawers offer the ability to set levels depending on what you’re storing.

Bins with adjustable heights can accommodate a wider range of food and beverage containers

Sliding shelves make it easier to reach items placed toward the back of the fridge

Deli trays allow you to store large platters of meats, cheeses and hors d’oeuvres

Built-in beverage holders keep canned or bottled beverages neat, orderly and easily accessible

Style and Finish: While storage capacity, features and efficiency are probably the most important aspects to consider, don’t overlook style. Your refrigerator will likely last for a number of years, so it’s important to select a model that will fit in with your changing tastes and continue to look great over time. Stainless-steel finishes provide one way to keep your refrigerator looking good for years, though they may cost a little bit extra initially. Built-in units let you customize your kitchen’s appearance while contoured doors and handles offer a sleek, sophisticated element.

Common colors to choose from include stainless steel, bisque, black and white

Trim kits allow you to give freestanding units the appearance of a built-in refrigerator

Some materials used to create refrigerators are not magnetic, so bear that in mind if you often keep menus, to-do lists and other important items on the fridge

Efficiency: Compared to older units, refrigerators manufactured over the past few years provide a tremendous improvement in energy efficiency. Units with the ENERGY STAR rating offer even more efficiency, being required by definition to use at least 15% less energy than current federal standards require (compact units must be 20% more efficient). In addition to purchasing an ENERGY STAR qualified unit, there are other ways to improve efficiency. Avoid placing your refrigerator next to a heat source, such as a stove or dishwasher, and be sure to defrost it as soon as necessary if you purchase a manual-defrost model. Don’t leave the door open for long periods of time, and make sure to leave space around the unit to allow air to reach the condenser coils, preventing heat buildup.

Energy-efficient models help reduce utility bills and are more environmentally friendly than standard refrigerators

Electronic controls and digital displays make it easy to set precise temperatures

Advanced temperature regulation systems keep refrigerators efficiently functioning at optimal temperatures

Features

Door or Temperature Alarms: Accidentally leaving the door of the refrigerator open not only wastes energy, it can also spoil food. Units with door or temperature alarms alert you when the door has been left open for more than a few minutes.

Child Lock: Units with a child lock will help prevent little chefs from accidentally leaving the door open or getting at treats when they are not supposed to.

Quiet Operation: Refrigerators with this feature reduce operational noise and help keep your kitchen atmosphere quiet.

Icemaker/Water Dispenser: Fighting with plastic ice cube trays can be a hassle, and there are never enough cubes when you have company. Built-in automatic icemakers ensure that there’s always plenty of ice available, and water dispensers provide cold water at the touch of a button. Look for icemakers and dispensers with built-in filtration systems to provide clean, pure water.

Fast-Cooling Compartment: If you find yourself needing to get food items or beverages to a cool temperature quickly, look for a refrigerator that features a special compartment that’s colder than the rest of the unit. This space cools things down fast without freezing them.

In-Door Television: For cooks who spend virtually all of their free time creating culinary delights, an in-door television makes it easy to compare notes with cooking shows or keep up-to-date on current news stories while you prepare dinner.

There are few things better than the mouth-watering aroma of a gourmet meal. Whether it’s the sweet scent of garlic or the savory smell of old-fashioned spaghetti sauce, there’s little question that smells greatly enhance the flavor of home cooking. Once the meal is over, however, you don’t want those smells to linger in the kitchen. Range hoods not only vent away odors instantly to keep your kitchen fresh, they also filter out heat, smoke, grease and moisture. Regardless of how your kitchen is set up, you’ll be able to find a hood that will fit in well in terms of both performance and style. Choose from over-the-range, downdraft, microwave/range hood combos and other designs and keep the following questions in mind as you shop:

What type of range hood is best suited for your kitchen?

Where should the range hood be installed?

What type of ventilation system should you use?

How large should your range hood be?

Are there any special features you’d like to have?

Ventilation Systems, Style and Installation

The size of your range and the amount of time you spend cooking will help determine what type of range hood you should purchase. Ventilation systems may be either external or recirculating, and range hoods can be installed in several different places, including underneath a cabinet, hanging down from the ceiling or even in the countertop. Though their primary function is to get rid of bad smells, smoke and grease, range hoods can also add a stylish element to your kitchen, particularly if you choose a customized unit. There is a large selection of features to choose from, including halogen lights, variable-speed fans and filter indicator lights, each of which is designed to make using your range hood easier and more convenient. Regardless of which type you choose, it’s important to remember that proper care and maintenance is essential to effective performance.

Ventilation Systems: There are two primary types of ventilation, external and recirculating. You can also choose from a couple of different fan types, including rotary fans, which feature blades, or centrifugal fans, which are shaped like a barrel or wheel. In general, centrifugal fans are slightly more powerful and better suited for longer ducts. The amount of air that is vented by fans is measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. Units with higher CFM rates move more air, and the Home Ventilating Institute, a nonprofit organization that certifies products and provides consumer information in the field of residential ventilation, recommends a minimum of 40 CFM for every linear foot of range. So, if you have a 3′ range, you’d need a range hood with at least 120 CFM. For gas cooktops, a good estimate is to have 1 CFM for every 100 BTUs of power the stove has. Consult the chart below to learn more about the different ventilation systems and some points of consideration for each.

Size, Style and Placement: The type of range hood you choose will be dictated in part by your kitchen setup and in part by your own sense of style. If your range is installed against a wall and there are cabinets above, you may want to consider an under-cabinet range hood or a slide-out unit, which can be unobtrusively tucked away when not in use. Telescoping downdraft hoods are installed in your countertop and remain hidden from view until they’re needed, at which time they can be activated with the touch of a button, making them ideal for people who don’t want a visible venting system. If you have a cooktop on an island, an island range hood provides a sleek, stylish ventilation method that comes down from the ceiling. Chimney hoods are mounted on a wall and used in conjunction with soffit vents. They often provide lights to help illuminate the cooking area. Depending on the size, style and features you choose, range hoods can cost anywhere from under $100 to several thousand dollars.

Common colors include almond, bisque, biscuit, stainless steel, silver, black and white

Make sure to match the finish and style of the hood to your range or cooktop

Hoods are typically 30”, 36” or 42” wide

Choose a hood that’s at least as wide as your range for maximum effectiveness

One-touch activation of downdraft models allows you to start them quickly and easily

Maintenance and Installation Tips: In many cases, you should be able to install a range hood on your own. If, however, you’re unsure of your ability to do so, don’t hesitate to contact a professional. For houses that already have ductwork in place, make sure you select a range hood that has a compatible design. If you’re building a new house or installing new ductwork, make sure to determine whether vertical or horizontal positioning will be more efficient. Always make sure that air is vented outside the house and not into an enclosed space, such as an attic, as heat, moisture and grease can accumulate there and cause damage. Models that can accommodate either round or rectangular ductwork provide greater installation versatility.

Generally speaking, gas ranges require a hood with a higher CFM rate than electric units

Wash or replace filters regularly as needed to maintain efficient and effective operation

Deep-frying, using a wok and frequent cooking may all necessitate cleaning or replacing filters more frequently

Convertible units generally allow for both vertical and horizontal ventilation

Wipe down range hood surfaces regularly using warm water and mild soap to avoid grease buildup

Features

Halogen Lights and Nightlight: Lights on a range hood make it easier to see what you’re cooking. Nightlights provide soft illumination that will prevent you from tripping when you sneak into the kitchen for a midnight snack.

Electronic Touch Controls: For easier use, look for models that feature convenient electronic touch controls for precise operation and the ability to preset on and off times.

Variable-Speed Fan with Heat Sensors: Variable-speed fans can speed up to handle more heat, and heat sensors automatically increase speed or sound an alarm when things get too hot.

Quiet Operation: The noise generated by range hoods is measured in sones and, in general, the higher the fan’s CFM rating, the more sones it produces. Some hoods, however, feature insulation for quiet operation, minimizing the noise to provide less of a distraction while you cook.

Automatic Shutoff: Some units shut the fan off automatically after a specified period of time or let you designate a shutoff time, so you can keep the fan going after you leave the kitchen to completely clear the air.

Self-Cleaning/Filterless Operation: For easy maintenance, look for a self-cleaning range hood with filterless operation. These units can be programmed to clean themselves, ensuring your kitchen stays fresh with minimal effort.

Filter Monitor and Indicator Light: You have far too many things going on in life as is, and having to keep track of when to change the filter in your range hood adds one more item to the list. Fortunately, some hoods feature an indicator light that lets you know when it’s time to replace the filter, making it one less thing you have to worry about.

Microwaves help you get hot food on the table in a hurry, so you can prepare fast, delicious and nutritious meals to satisfy your appetite or feed a hungry crowd. With a wide variety of available models and options, microwaves are designed to meet a diverse range of needs. Choose from basic models that make heating up a frozen meal quick and easy and high-end models that provide a wealth of convenient cooking options right at your fingertips. With solutions for everything from compact to spacious environments and classic looks to modern styling, there is a microwave that is perfect for your kitchen. Whether you are purchasing your first microwave or looking to upgrade your existing one, consider the following questions before buying:

Which microwave style best fits in with your existing kitchen?

Are you preparing small meals or large family feasts?

Do you want to crisp and brown food in addition to microwaving?

Will you use it to primarily warm and reheat food or prepare entire meals?

What special features would you like to have available?

Cooking Options and Microwave Styles

The days of using a microwave simply to reheat coffee or warm up a TV dinner are over. Modern microwaves give you the ability to whip up nearly any recipe in your cookbook, and they help you do so quickly and efficiently. From softening butter and simmering sauces to defrosting a roast and cooking vegetables, these appliances have food ready to eat with the touch of a few buttons. Choose from three different styles, countertop, over-the-range and built-in. Each one offers a range of power and capacity, so it’s even easier to narrow down the options and find an ideal fit.

Cooking Options: Standard microwaves enable you to defrost, reheat and cook a variety of foods. Some models make cooking easier by providing one-touch controls for items like popcorn, pizza or potatoes. Others allow you to store the settings for specific recipes so you can perfectly recreate your masterpieces time and again. In addition to standard units, convection microwaves are available, which combine microwave and convection heating in one convenient appliance. These units tend to be more expensive, but offer the added ability to crisp and brown foods as well as heat them more quickly.

Capacity ranges from compact (0.5-0.8 cu. ft.), mid-sized (0.8-1.4 cu. ft.) and large (1.4 cu. ft. to over 2.0 cu. ft.) models

Power varies from 600 to 1,300 watts with higher wattage units delivering faster heating

Convection microwaves crisp and brown as well as quickly heat food

Countertop Microwaves: Countertop units rest on any open surface in your kitchen and can be easily moved. These freestanding microwaves are portable, allowing you to take the unit with you when moving to a new home or apartment. They are available in the widest selection of sizes and power capabilities and come in all price ranges, so you are sure to find one that suits your needs and budget. Some models even give you the choice to mount the unit underneath a cabinet to provide more placement options and free up valuable counter space.

Sit on a countertop or table and are easy to move

Come in the widest variety of capacity and power ranges

Offer economical solutions for any budget

Versatile features and capabilities for a perfect fit in any kitchen

Over-the-Range Microwaves: Over-the-range models install above your range or cooktop in place of a range hood. They function just like countertop microwaves, but provide the added benefit of eliminating smoke, steam or cooking odors from the kitchen with a built-in ventilation system. These microwaves feature a powerful fan whose efficiency is measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFMs. Some models incorporate a hidden vent design, which offer a sleek, clean appearance. To draw airborne irritants away, some microwave ventilation systems recirculate the air through an internal filter while other models draw them away through an external vent. Over-the-range microwaves also include cooktop lights for greater visibility. Installation of an over-the-range unit can be tricky, so it may be necessary to consult a professional. Most models range from mid- to large-sized capacities, though they’re not as deep as countertop microwaves and cost a little more.

Professional installation is recommended

Built-In Microwaves: If you’re short on counter space and don’t have room above your range, a built-in microwave may be just what you need. These models can be installed into a wall or cabinet for convenient operation that won’t interfere with your cooking routines. The mid- to large-sized capacity and high-powered operation give your busy kitchen the extra edge you need to get great-tasting meals on the table night after night. This space-saving option comes with a slightly higher cost than countertop models and is an ideal solution for your sleek, modern kitchen. Advanced electrical knowledge is required for installation, so consult with a professional for help in getting your unit up and running.

Features

Automatic Defrost: Some models allow you to select the type of food and weight you wish to defrost. The microwave will automatically determine the optimum power level and cook time to ensure thorough defrosting, saving you from having to guess or continually check to see if food is ready.

Convection Cooking: Convection heating circulates air evenly around food and is used for crisping and browning or in combination with microwave heating for faster cooking. Convection cooking in a microwave allows you to prepare a wider range of foods, including meats such as roast chicken or browned hamburger.

Sensor Cooking: Models with this feature assess moisture levels in food as it cooks and automatically adjust power level and remaining cook time to ensure even heating. While you’ll still need to check food to make sure it’s done, sensor cooking removes a lot of the guesswork from microwaving.

Child Lock: By enabling you to lock the control keypad, models with a child lock system allow you to prevent accidental use, keeping the kitchen safer for your little helpers. This feature also prohibits activation when you’re wiping down and cleaning the keypad.

Turntable/Movable Tray: Most models feature a turntable that rotates food to ensure even heating. In some microwaves, you can remove the table to create extra space for large or oddly shaped cookware. A few newer models offer a movable tray which serves the same purpose as the turntable but makes it easier to accommodate rectangular pans that won’t fit on a round table.

Shortcut/Convenience Keys: These helpful pads allow you to prepare specific foods such as popcorn, pizza and beverages with the touch of a single button. Basic models give you a few options while high-end models are likely to provide a multitude of one-touch options, an especially useful feature for individuals and families that microwave frequently.

Time Cook: Some microwaves allow you to program two different cook times and power levels for a single dish, a feature that comes in handy when cooking foods such as rice that require different heat settings for different lengths of time. You can open the door, stir your food and resume cooking without having to reprogram your settings.
